Audio Book Review | Shadows in My Room by Linda Weaver Clark

"What's That Noise?": Amber hears noises that disturb her, such as the wind and thunder. Her mother teaches Amber to use her imagination by turning something fearful into something fun. 

Review:

This was a very cute children's book. I liked the way that the mothers explained what the shadows were or what each of the noises were. In a way that would comfort children and make them less afraid and able to fall asleep. I liked the little touch at the end with the mom and dad in "What's That Noise?" The "I'm Not Sleepy" story was cute, as well. However, the mother "gently" said "I know, dear," quite a lot. Now maybe I'm just being picky, it is a children's book. A young child may not notice that at all.

Something I did have an issue with (and people are probably going to think it's feminist bull but whatever) is that this book very, very much falls into gender stereotypes. In the first two stories little girls are afraid of the shadows and the noises and they are thinking about their brothers and whether they would be afraid. Why is it only the little girls that are scared? A little boy could just as easily be scared, and that is perfectly okay. Same for "I'm Not Sleepy". It almost gave off the vibe that girls are naturally more obedient than boys - or expected to be. And the family stereotypes. In the first story it is unclear whether there is a dad/husband involved. But in the last two there are. Again, maybe me just being picky but the whole mom, dad and two kids thing is sort of a stereotype. And in the last one the boy climbs into bed with his mom and dad. Sweet and adorable but what about a single mom? Or, hey, a single dad? Okay, I'm through with my ranting that many people will write off as overzealous talk. 

The performance was very good. I enjoyed the narration a lot. Heidi did a great job of distinguishing the voices from one another. My favorite was the voice of Kayla (although maybe I'm biased because I have a cousin named Kayla.) It was such a sweet, innocent, genuine voice. The relationships between the mothers and children were good, too. Very sweet. And even though it may have been expected to have both the mom and dad (although nice to see a couple staying together but whose to say there are never single parents or other guardians?), that scene where the son climbs into bed with them was very sweet. I do wish that the dads had a bigger part, though. It was good, though and I would give it 3 quills.

Review:

I found this author through other authors that I know (for the life of me I can't remember which one.) I was in the mood for a short story and remembered hearing about this one so I went ahead an picked it up. I read this one the beginning of last month. (I'm unconscionably  behind on my book reviews.) I read it in between commercials while watching Criminal Minds, I think.

It was just what I needed. Something quick to read but not just something short, something that also had substance and interested me. A relatable subject, too. First kisses. Something that everyone (at least everyone that I know) was at least somewhat nervous about.

I really enjoyed this short story. I liked the characters a lot. They seemed like great friends and I like seeing that type of relationship. The kisses themselves were pretty great, too. That first kiss... damn. That was one hell of a first kiss, let me just say that. In contrast, I loved that second kiss. How much more careful it was in comparison.

I enjoyed the writing, the story and the characters. After I finished the first thing that I did was look up Dina Littner on GoodReads. I'm anxiously awaiting when she will have a full length novel available. You can be sure that I'll be on the lookout and pick that up. Especially if it's about these characters because I really want to know how thing went for them after those kisses.

I recommend this if you want a quick read with good writing, heart, good characters and a little bit of heat. I give this one 4 quills and will be on the lookout for more from Dina Littner.

Feeling a stich in my side, I slowed to a stop and unzipped my jacket. With my hands on my hips, I took several deep breaths, embracing the sharp burn in my lungs. I loved this time of year, when the snow was at its last days. I enjoyed the cold white sheets of ice, because I knew that they would be gone in no time. Just like everything else.

“Hey, girl!” An SUV full of guys pulled up beside me, the one in the passenger’s seat sticking his head out the window. “What’s your name?” he asked, looking me up and down.

Ignoring him, I turned on my heel and kept walking. But the SUV stayed at my side, slowly skimming the edge of the sidewalk. Warmth flooded my body, along with a mix of fear and unease. 

“Hey!” the driver shouted, leaning over the console. “We’re talking to you! Come here!”

They must have been students, like me and Sara. The neighborhood wasn’t far from campus and we knew a handful of people at school who had rented houses here before, out of a dislike for dorms and apartments. If these guys went to UW, I hoped that today would be our first and last encounter.

“Maybe she needs to warm up,” the passenger suggested. “Here, Ice Queen! Have some coffee.” He threw a Starbucks cup out the window at me, despite the fact that the container wasn’t empty. 

As I braced myself, steaming hot coffee burst through the lid and splattered all over me. I staggered back and collided with another runner, as we both fell to the ground. 

“Yes!” the guys in the SUV cheered. They took off, speeding through the neighborhood, as the passenger stuck his head out the window and rejoiced in celebration.

“Jerks,” the stranger beside me muttered. 

Sitting back on my elbow, I looked over at the one thing I hated the most in this world right now. The one thing that had to be here at this moment. A Guy.

“Let me help you up,” he offered, extending his hand for me to take. When we were both on our feet again, he looked at me and smiled. It was the best smile I had ever seen.

Dressed in jogging pants and a sweatshirt, he was the embodiment of everything I had been searching for and now sworn off for good. Tall. Lean. Attractive. His short, curly hair was the darkest shade of brunette, yet not quite black. His eyes were soft and light, his irises somewhere in between blue and gray. My mouth watered at the sight of his chiseled cheekbones, strong jawline, and the slight stubble on his face. 

He was my dream guy, but I had given up on dreaming a long time ago. So I did what I had to do. I ran. 

“Hey, wait,” he pleaded, grabbing my arm. “Are you okay? I’m sorry about those guys. Don’t worry about them. They’re just jerks.”

I nodded, then looked down at the coffee stains on my clothes. These would be fun to get out, especially since our washing machine was a gadget sent straight from hell. 

“I’m fine,” I said. “Thanks.”

With my head down, I stepped back and walked away from him.

Afterwards, Lindsay attended Florida State University and graduated Summa Cum Laude with an English Literature major, Psychology minor, and Specialized Studies in Markets and Institutions.

Camp NaNoWriMo!!

 

Hi guys!! I'm just checking in to do a quick update. 

Okay, so, it's the first day of the month of April. To some, this means April Fools Day. To me, this means the first day of Camp NaNoWriMo!! Yes, I really do love NaNoWriMo. (Okay, maybe it's a love hate relationship but mostly love.) I've done and won the November NaNoWriMo twice and this will be my fourth time participating in Camp NaNoWriMo. And I plan to win this time, as well. People who know me may not think that I'm particularly competitive, but I have a slight competitive streak. Friendly competition. Like how some friends in school have a friendly competition over  their grades. That's me. I'm also competitive with myself, if that makes sense. Losing Camp NaNoWriMo is just not an option in my mind. My goal for this session is to write a novelette set in the same world as my YA Paranormal/Urban Fantasy trilogy. The word count goal is 10,000 words. Which I should be able to do. Even with the other stuff that I have going on. 

Other stuff: The other stuff is as follows. Editing book one in that YA Paranormal/Urban Fantasy trilogy because I am planning to start querying in about two weeks. (Super exciting and nerve wracking!!) I'm also working with someone else on another project that can read about here. It's basically a collection of true stories from people who have the same rare genetic disorder that I do. Like I said, there's more about it here. I'm not explaining it as well. Mostly because I should be editing or writing right now instead of blogging... 

So now I'm off to plan that novelette and then start writing it. And to edit book one in that trilogy. I will leave you with this teaser from My Heart is Yours.
