ABOUT RACHEL HARRIS

Rachel Harris writes humorous love stories about sassy girls-next-door and the hot guys that make them swoon. Emotion, vibrant settings, and strong families are a staple in each of her Rachel Harrisbooks…and kissing. Lots of kissing.

A Cajun cowgirl now living in Houston, she firmly believes life’s problems can be solved with a hot, sugar-coated beignet or a thick slice of king cake, and that screaming at strangers for cheap, plastic beads is acceptable behavior in certain situations. She homeschools her two beautiful girls and watches way too much Food Network with her amazing husband.

An admitted Diet Mountain Dew addict, she gets through each day by laughing at herself, hugging her kids, and losing herself in story. She writes young adult, new adult, and adult romances, and LOVES talking with readers!

April NaNoWriMo

This month I haven't been posting regularly on this blog at all. But, there is a very good reason for that. (Well, a couple. But at the moment I'm only sharing one with you).

I have been participating in the April NaNoWriMo session! :D

This is my first time participating and I am determined to win. Now, that being said, I am behind. But I am resolved to write every day and catch up so that I can win NaNoWriMo!! I love the story that I'm writing so that helps, of course. Some days, though, I write more than others. I'm still so determoned to finish. I also feel like as I get closer to the end, it will get easier. (Here's a secret: I already have a version of my last chapter written. So I know exactly what is going to happen). ;) Typing so fast does make me have a lot of spellin errors, though. (And it seems that I just can't stop doing that).

Anyway, my progress today. I started out at 20,177 words and ended today with 23,430 words. Today I've written 3,253 words. Not bad.Wish me luck for the rest of NaNoWriMo!! I want to finish on time!! :)

Excerpt:
My scattered emotions continuously wove themselves around each other chaotically, growing from a few errant threads of thought into a tangled mess, snagging tighter and tighter until I was ready to explode.

I began wailing, and Preston grabbed me by the shoulders, pulled me back, and said, “Destiny, stop.” But I couldn’t. The tears kept coming. Living without Isaac was like being held underwater and being told to breathe. I would take water into my lungs, and it would burn. And eventually, everything would grow dimmer until it became black.

Preston shook my shoulders, jarring me from my despair. “Look at me, Destiny.” I cracked open my eyes and peered into his trustworthy green ones. They were so full of concern. “He’s not worth your tears. Do you hear me?”

I stared back at him. Not worth my tears? Did he have any clue what Isaac really meant to me?

“Don’t let him hurt you worse than he already has. It’s going to be hard for a long time, but you’re going to survive this.”

“How can you possibly know that?” What did he know about getting his heart ripped out? He’d never even had a girlfriend.

A corner of Preston’s mouth quirked up. “Because the Destiny Clark I know is a fighter.”

Blog Tour ~ Twelve Steps by Veronica Bartles

Twelve Steps
by Veronica Bartles
Release Date: 03/25/14

Book Summary:
Sixteen-year-old Andi is tired of being a second-class sibling to perfect sister Laina. There in Laina's shadow, Andi's only noticeable feature is her pretty awesome hair. And even that is eclipsed by Laina's perfect everything else.

When Andi’s crush asks her to fix him up with Laina, Andi decides enough is enough and devises a twelve-step program to wrangle the spotlight away from Laina. After all, great hair must count for something.

Step 1: Admit she’s powerless to change her perfect sister, and accept that her life really, really sucks. OK, maybe that's two steps in one.

Step 4: Make a list of her good qualities besides great hair. There have got to be at least three good qualities, right?

Step 7: Demand attention for more than just her shortcomings, and break out of her shell. Easier said that done, but worth the effort in the long-run.

When a stolen kiss from her crush ends in disaster, Andi finds that her prince isn’t as charming as she'd hoped, and realizes she may need a new program--perhaps with less steps!

As cracks in Laina’s flawless façade begin to show, the sisters work together to find a spotlight big enough for both to shine.

Review:
I know Veronica Bartles through Rachel Harris' Flirt Squad. When I heard about her debut release I knew that I had to get it on it comehow! I'm so glad that I made it on the blog tour!

The word that comes to mind when I think of this book is: adorable. So much of this book, in my opinion, was adorable. If you are looking for a read like that then I definitely suggest that you pick this up.

On to characters. I really enjoyed both Andi and Laina as characters. Andi's fearless exterior seems very relatable to me. I enjoyed seeing her more vulnerable side as well. She was also just a really fun character to read. Honestly, I also liked Laina. I feel as though many people would probably feel the same annoyance toard her as Andi did. But you know what? If I'm comapring myself to both of the characters, I actually have more in common with Laina. By no means do I look perfect all the time or was a straight A student. But forthe most part I did very well in school and was very concious of it. Plus, I kept (and still keep) an avid journal just like Laina does in the book. So I could relate to her, as well. The other thing that I liked about Laina was that she was naive and disorganized. It was good to see that even she had 'flaws'. Jared, of course, was a great character as well. I enjoyed reading about him. I especially enjoyed reading about him when he and Andi were in the same scene.

The story was vey good as well. I like the idea of Andi coming up with a twelve step program. To me, this is part of the "adorable-ness" of the book. Seeing Andi adapt was great, too. And some of my favorite moments remain seeing Andi and Laina have that sisterly bond. That was really beautiful. Even when Laina drove Andi crazy, she still felt that love towards her and even an innate need to protect her.

I would certainly recommend this book. Especially to anyone who enjoys YA contemporary. 4 stars!

About the Author:

As the second of eight children and the mother of four, Veronica Bartles is no stranger to the ups and downs of sibling relationships. (She was sandwiched between the gorgeous-and-insanely-popular older sister and the too-adorable-for-words younger sister.) She uses this insight to write stories about siblings who mostly love each other, even while they’re driving one another crazy.   When she isn’t writing or getting lost in the pages of her newest favorite book, Veronica enjoys knitting fabulous bags and jewelry out of recycled plastic bags and old VHS tapes, sky diving (though she hasn’t actually tried that yet), and inventing the world’s most delectable cookie recipes.  TWELVE STEPS is Veronica Bartles's first novel.
