Excerpt:

Planting my feet on the floor, I grab the assignment packet. I thumb through the long list of group dates, taking note of all the partner-time required (a lot), and a rush of endorphins floods my bloodstream. My heart pounds just like it did when I tagged out Jefferson to win last night’s game, and when a relieved exhale parts my lips, I hear Carlos say, “Uh oh.”
“What?” I ask distractedly.
“You’ve got that psycho look in your eyes.” I raise my eyes and he waves a finger back and forth in front of my face. “The same one you had before we egged Crestmont High last week. You’re planning something.”
Adrenaline bounces my knee. “Maybe I am.”
My hand beats out a rhythm on my thigh as I realize that this is exactly what I’d been waiting for. The answer to the itch under my skin. My extreme restlessness. It’s not a new feeling—if I were honest, it’s been on a low simmer for years. Being with Aly just brought it to a boil. I’ve been numb ever since I lost Peyton, and this… this insane marriage project is my chance to finally make things right.
“Tell Abuelita I’ll be there,” I say, returning my gaze to the back of Peyton’s head. “And that I’ll be bringing a girl even she can’t complain about.” From the corner of my eye, I see him stare at me in confusion. “I’m bringing my wife.”
Carlos’s mouth opens in a mix of shock and doubt and I don’t blame him. I saw Peyton’s reaction, too. But I have three whole weeks between now and then, and a plan taking shape in my mind.
Peyton may think she hates me, but that’s only because she doesn’t know the total truth. Soon, that’ll change—but I can’t rush it. I have to start small. Ease into it. Use these dates and outings to show her how much I’ve changed since I was fifteen and screwed everything up.
But I will do it.
“Mark my words, Carlos,” I say, feeling excited about a girl for the first time in a very long time. But then, that’s because it’s not just any girl; it’s my girl. She just doesn’t know it yet. “I’m gonna be the best damn husband in this entire class.”
He looks at me uncertainly, but that doesn’t faze me. I won’t let it. I know I don’t deserve it. Hell, I never deserved her. But I’m not letting anything stop meNot this time. Thanks to Coach Stasi, I’m going to remind Peyton of all the reasons she fell for me in the first place.
And then I’m going to make her do it again.

Book Review | With Ties That Bind by Trisha Wolfe!!

Title: With Ties That Bind
Author: Trisha Wolfe
Release Date: February 29th 2016

GoodReads Blurb:

This series is a spinoff of the Broken Bonds serial which must be read prior to beginning this first book. Contains spoilers to the Broken Bonds serial.

Detective Ethan Quinn has questions. The Arlington Slasher case is closed, the UNSUB no longer a threat—but Quinn can’t quiet the suspicion he harbors toward his partner and the young, attractive M.E. Not only does he loathe his uncertainty, he’s torn between doing his job and protecting his team.

But burying himself in cases no longer works. He’s restless. On edge. And tired of fighting his compulsions. Quinn has always viewed the law in black and white. Only now his world is swirling with a murky gray that threatens to devour him.

When lead medical examiner Avery Johnson careens toward a dangerous path, she pulls the unwitting detective into a dark web of deception and lust, triggered by a spree of recent killings.

Is this new player linked to the Bathory murders, or is it another copycat?

Time almost took Avery from him once before. As the clock ticks, Quinn will stop at nothing to protect her, refusing to let Avery become a victim again. Against his uncompromising logic, Quinn can’t deny his feelings. Avery forces him to acknowledge his darker desires, tempting his control—which weakens with every second he spends with the feisty M.E. as they hunt down the perpetrator threatening to tear them apart.

Review:

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Whenever I first start out writing a review of one of Trisha's books I feel utterly at a loss for words. I always end up finding them but starting out is very difficult. (Just like when I write a book. Hmmm.)

While reading Trisha's With Visions of Red series I always really liked Detective Ethan Quinn. I loved when I got to read about him so to hear that Trisha was doing a spin off series that would focus on Quinn and Avery definitely got me very excited. I also always had the suspicion that Quinn was super sexy. ;)

It took me much longer than I would have liked to read this. While reading I was also editing and it had pretty much taken over my life. So it wasn't because I didn't enjoy the book. I was really enjoying the book. Sneaking time to read whenever I could. Five minutes here, ten there. And then once I got to the 80% mark I pretty much just didn't stop. I stayed up too late that night to finish the book. I just couldn't stop reading.

The tension between Avery and Quinn was easy to see and feel from the page. When some of that tension is finally broken you can tell how much they wanted each other. Trisha definitely knows how to write a hot scene. But more then that, make the reader feel that these characters feel something for each other more than just physical attraction. It was obvious how much Quinn cares about Avery. How desperate he is to protect her. She's a tough lady and says more than once that she doesn't need his protection but that isn't going to stop him from looking out for her.

I was also excited to see Sadie in this book a lot. I love Sadie. She is one of my favorite characters. I can't go too much into some of the things I loved about it (spoilers) but I did love it. I also loved the friendship that her and Avery had formed. It's great to see two strong women. And, of course, when Colton made an appearance (or when Sadie mentioned him) I all but jumped out of my seat for joy.

In her last series, Trisha periodically had chapters from the Unsub's POV. In this book that didn't happen until the end. As usual, she had me just as enthralled reading their POV. I don't have nearly enough information to take a guess as to who it is yet but that won't stop me from trying. Even now, I'm going over all of his idiosyncrasies, speech patterns, et cetera. One particular thing that he did I found interesting. (It also reminded me of a fictional character I'm totally in love with that I'd rather not be reminded of when reading about this Unsub, Trisha!! lol)

Overall, this book was amazing. I loved it. Beautifully written, suspenseful, beautiful characters. I can't wait to see what happens next. 5 quills!!

Excerpt

One day, when the sun was preparing to center itself in the sky, Henry felt still, peaceful somehow, as if the water had stopped moving him. Henry slowly opened his eyes to find himself lying on his stomach, his hands pressed into the sandy shore beneath him. He moved his fingers, and as they dug into the damp ground, his face lifted. Holding that small clump of wet sand in the air caused Henry to look forward, where he discovered a tropical island in the midst of the sea.
In astonishment, Henry staggered to his feet, not minding the waves that still flowed against the back of his knees. Pushing the hair from his face, Henry crawled towards the lush paradise, finding it hard to move on such weak muscles. His mouth hung open, so full of hunger and thirst that he yelped in delight once he discovered a table of food, covered with exotic fruits, leafy vegetables, and fine grains.
There was a small wooden shack, just bordering the area where Henry ate like a mad man, shoving as much sustenance as he could into his mouth at once. He closed his eyes, taking a thankful breath, as he had never felt so grateful for food in his entire life.
Except for the small shack and table where Henry had found the food, the rest of the land remained a tropical beach. From what Henry had noticed so far, a forest began where the sand ended, and if he were to walk deeper, he might find running water.
Taking one last piece of fruit, Henry stepped towards the shack, whose door frame was covered only by a transparent sheet of white fabric. He moved closer, for behind the cloth he saw a young woman sleeping, her body outstretched on a small rectangular section of bedding against the wall.
He took another step, only to make out the image of her face, framed in a glossy mane of raven black hair. However, with that step, a deep, haunting growl sounded from the border of the jungle. Just as quickly as Henry had shifted his eyes to observe the noise, a black panther, long and sleek, emerged from the woods. Fearless, the creature soared through the air and pounced on top of Henry. Before he could understand what was happening, the snarling black cat held an enormous paw over him, and then swiped its claws across his chest.
Henry wailed in panic and terror, using his arms to push the cat off him, as it pinned him to the ground by the flat of his back. The creature clawed at Henry’s stomach in protest, while the young man did the best he could to protect his face.
During the struggle, Henry had never felt so near the bottom of the food chain in all his life. He was paralyzed with fear as the great cat hovered over his body, with such a close distance that no human ever lived to talk about. But what terrified Henry the most, above the shiny, slimy white fangs, were the panther’s piercing green eyes, so alive with the greenery of the forest, that they could have been cut from the leaves of a vine for all he knew. They were so perfectly round and rigid, that they nearly looked like stones, though not the exact color of emerald. And yet it was these cat’s eyes, those jungle eyes, which made his heart stop.
“Jade,” a soft, transcendent voice called from above. The cat retreated immediately, slowly walking away from Henry.
Sunlight shone on Henry’s face as he lay flat, still on the ground. He lowered his eyes, horrified by the blood stains on his white ocean-soaked shirt. But then, the face of a lovely woman stood before the sun, blocking out its light. Henry looked up at her, taking in the long, silky black hair; golden, sun-kissed skin; and green eyes – so much like the jungle he had just discovered.
She narrowed her eyes, looking over Henry’s body as he felt her pulling him into a trance, mesmerizing him with her beauty. Then, for he had not seen it coming, Henry felt a tremendous pain enter the side of his head. All of a sudden, he noticed an object in her hand that she had just bludgeoned him with. But before the blue sky faded to black, the last thing Henry remembered was the natural hue of her glistening green jungle eyes.

Interview with Maria Luisa Lang | Author of The Pharaoh's Cat

1. What is the name of your latest book? Tell us about it.
The Pharaoh’s Cat. Here’s the blurb:

The Pharaoh’s Cat, narrated in the present tense by the cat himself, is the story of a free-spirited, quick-witted stray in ancient Egypt who suddenly finds himself with human powers joined to his feline nature.

The cat immediately captures the attention of the seventeen-year-old Pharaoh, making him laugh for the first time since his parents' death, and is brought to live with him at the royal palace.

The cat also becomes friends with the High Priest of the god Amun-Ra and seeks his help in solving the mystery of his human powers and the supernatural manifestations that later plague him. He has an enemy in the Vizier—the Pharaoh's uncle and the second most powerful man in Egypt. The Vizier hates him for himself and even more for his relationship with the Pharaoh.

The cat participates in festivities at the royal palace, developing an insatiable appetite for good food, wine, and gossip. He later accompanies the Pharaoh on a trip through his kingdom, all the while renewing the Pharaoh’s ability to enjoy life and inspiring him to become a stronger leader.
Between the cat and the Pharaoh a bond of love gradually forms which will determine Egypt's destiny.

The Pharaoh's Cat imaginatively blends Egyptology with comedy, drama, and even time travel--the cat and the High Priest will meet Elena, a resident of the twenty-first century and the daughter of a renowned Egyptologist.

2. How long have you been writing?
For the last few years, but I was toying with ideas long before.

3. Do you have any favorite books or authors that have influenced you?
Kingley Amis, especially Lucky Jim, and Bulgakov, The Master and Margarita

4. What is your favorite quote from The Pharaoh's Cat?
It's comforting to lick my private parts when faced with adversity.

5. So, this is always a little bit of dreaded question, but I have to ask, where did the idea for The Pharaoh's Cat come from?
My love of cats and my fascination with ancient Egypt

6. Can you tell us anything about what you're working on now?
I’ve nearly finished Lady of Mystery, the sequel to The Pharaoh’s Cat. It’s also set in ancient Egypt and New York City, but the cat goes to Bath and Stonehenge in England as well.

7. Do you have any advice for aspiring authors or anything more to say before you go?
Don’t try to please an imaginary reader. It will only inhibit you and your writing will reflect that.

Interview with B. D. Messick | Author of Sojourn

1. What is the name of your latest book? Tell us about it.

Before we begin, I just wanted to thank you for taking the time to chat today.  My latest book is called Sojourn - The Wildlands.  It's a dystopian adventure/romance novel centered around the heroine Rayn Mirago.  I'll give you the blurb to help explain what it's all about:

Rayn Mirago's seventeenth birthday is tomorrow, but there will be no party, no gifts, and no celebration. Like every other child in this world where humanity is on the brink of extinction and resources are at a premium, she must make her Sojourn across the former United States to prove her worth. The human race has nearly been wiped due to overpopulation, global warming, and our own ignorance and conceit. The coastal cities of the U.S. have been reclaimed by the ocean and the Midwest is now a vast desert wasteland known as the Deadlands. The remaining fifty thousand or so survivors in the old United States now live in one of five walled cities, called Enclaves where they eek out a meager existence.

Rayn's Sojourn begins when she steps through the gates of the Vegas Enclave and into the vast wilderness between the old city and Deadlands, an area known as the Wildlands. She will face many struggles and dangers that will challenge her, make her doubt herself, and force her to realize that she is stronger than she ever imagined.

But first, she must overcome the burden of leaving her old life, everything and everyone she has ever known and loved behind.

2. How long have you been writing?
I've been doing it seriously for about five years or so, but I've been tinkering with ideas and story concepts all my life.  I think my early years playing Dungeons and Dragons (nerd alert - proud to be) helped hone my creative energies.

3. Do you have any favorite books or authors that have influenced you?

Tolkein...I mean that's where I first learned to love reading and think about writing.  Mt other favorite book is a little obscure...it's called Windhaven by a fairly well known writer called George R.R. Martin (wink, wink) in collaboration with Lisa Tuttle...it is a fantastic book.  I have a very worn out paperback copy.

4. What is your favorite quote from Sojourn?

I never knew this was what the world was really like outside the Enclaves.  I mean, they tell you in class how things used to be and what happened, but it really doesn’t give you a sense of what it’s really like.  The descriptions in school don’t mention the clothes you find scattered on the ground, the toys abandoned in the sand and the empty places where people used to live, work, and love.
I always pictured the Wildlands as some sort of barren landscape wiped clean of any evidence that humans had ever even been here, but it’s not like that at all.  We all know that the world used to be filled with people, billions of people, but until you walk out here you can't understand the loss.  It’s one sad sight after another.

It's more a passage than a quote...sorry about that.

5. So, this is always a little bit of dreaded question, but I have to ask, where did the idea for The Pharaoh's Cat come from?

It's hard to say really, but part of it came from the news, from real life I suppose.  I'm not trying to preach here, but we all know that Global Warming is a thing, a real thing and the longer we allow ourselves to deny it, the harder it's going to be to stop it before it's too late.

6. Can you tell us anything about what you're working on now?

Well, in addition to the other three books in the Sojourn series, I have three other novels in the works...an urban fantasy called EVE, a steampunk adventure entitled Amaveo, and an old book that I am trying to re-work called Aperios.

7. Do you have any advice for aspiring authors or anything more to say before you go?

Just write.  Don't worry about what other people say...just write.  I'll be honest, I have not made much money from my books so far, and I want too, or course, but the writing is what should matter to you...the creation of new worlds, the birth of characters that you eventually fall in love with...that's the payoff...although money would be nice.

Also...don't concern yourself with bad reviews...I've gotten my share...but no one loves everything...even the best novels are disliked by many people.  If you get a great review and a bad review, then you know that you are a real writer.

Don't forget to check out B. D. Messick's books!!

Serena Clarke | The Isian Series

Magic, Fantasy, Romance, and Mystery

Fantasy has become one of the most popular genre, simply because you are taken into a completely new world… a world of magic and mystery… where almost anything can happen. In this new series by Serena Clarke, we have an enchanting kingdom and mystical creatures that reside in the forests.

The Treasure of Isian is the first book in The Isian Series. Prince Garin is a brave, proud, adventure-seeking prince. Elani is his most trusted servant and she would do anything for him. Their quest to find the mystical Treasure of Isian is immediately interrupted and they find themselves confronted by giants, elves, dragons, and a vengeful water-witch. Elani must face her greatest fears to save her prince and her kingdom. Will they be able to make a great sacrifice to save the kingdom?

“The Treasure of Isian was a stirring tale of an enchanted servant and a handsome prince. The adventures they face together as they search for the fabled treasure of Isian that will grant the bearer any wish they desire. Once I picked it up, I couldn’t put it down. The author did a wonderful job pacing the story and connecting me to the characters. Superb story that brought a smile to my face and helped me remember that sometimes, we can overlook the most valuable treasures in life if we’re not careful.” --Author Charissa Stastny

In the second book in this series, The Alliance of Isian, Isian decides to make an alliance with their long time enemies.  Isian sends a proposal, offering their daughter to the prince, in order to ensure an alliance. Princess Gabrielle and Prince Alec must learn to work together and trust each other in order to triumph in the approaching war. With a mysterious beast attacking the kingdom, their lives in danger, and overcoming their vast cultural differences, will love grow despite their trials?

When we think of fantasy, we think of magic and mythical creatures, but it is not the same without some romance. Cheryl Larson wrote: “I am always intrigued by stories of arranged marriages and how they turn to marriages filled with love. There is plenty of action and intrigue in the storyline. I can't wait for the next book in the series!”

The Secret of Isian is the third book in this series and was just released. Many prophecies have been uttered about the impending war and those who will seek to stop it. With the war finally upon them, Rimelda, a talented seer, has heard the prophecies and believes she can help. Prince Ander, doubtful of her abilities and her true intensions, but determined to save his kingdom accepts her help and they proceed on a quest to end the war. Hindered by enemies as well as their own doubts, Ander and Rimelda must search for guidance in unlikely places and unravel the mysteries of the prophecies. With the world shrouded in darkness, will Ander accept his destiny in time to save the kingdoms and will he admit his true feelings for Rimelda?

The Secret of Isian is a fast moving tale. Not only does it have romance, but also lots of action, intrigue, and battles as the characters make their trek to save the kingdom. While Prince Ander learns to accept his destiny, he also realizes that his love for Rimelda is growing day by day. For the first time in his life, he has met his match! She is spunky, obstinate, and frustrating. But at the same time, she intrigues Ander because she demands respect. Even from the prince!” –Author Linda Weaver Clarke

The Treasure of Isian and The Alliance of Isian, published by Red Mountain Shadows Publishing, can be found at local libraries, bookstores, and online.

Excerpt:

“Craig, this is Travis, my date. Travis,” I answer while turning to face my guest, “this is Craig. He’s a friend of my brother’s.” Out of the corner of my eye I see Craig flinch at the description, but he recovers quickly. Looking back and forth between Travis and me, Craig takes a moment before speaking.

“I thought we were friends, too, Christine.” Unable to control my reaction, the sting of Craig’s words causes me to flinch.

He’s right, we are supposed to be friends, but I’m not in a “friendly” mood. I’m still licking my wounds from his rejection. Months ago we had agreed to stop pursuing anything more than friendship when Craig kept beating his head against my carefully built wall. The arguing had escalated quickly; after only knowing each other a few weeks we started to spend most of our time together fighting. I had hoped for the fairy-tale beginning to a beautiful romantic movie. Instead, our story seemed more likely to end up on some seedy afternoon talk show.

New to town, he and his friend and business partner are focused on finishing their new remodel and making money. One boys’ night out introduces him to Anna and all of that changes. Noah wants something real; a place to call home.
He might be pushy, but Noah is determined to get what he wants. Just as Anna and Noah start to come together, someone from the past comes back to cause trouble.

Can Noah convince Anna to take a chance on him and break free from the pain of her memories? Will Anna look past what she cannot change to see a future that includes Noah?
